AARP says..."Proposition 98 is a deceptive measure placed on the ballot by wealthy apartment and mobile home park landlords that will hurt millions of seniors and all Californians. Prop. 98 is designed to increase the landlords' profits by repealing important renter protections, eliminating rent control and creating new environmental loopholes. All Californians will pay a steep price for this damaging measure which is a direct assault on seniors, renters, our environment and our communities. AARP California strongly urges voters to vote NO on 98."Jeannine English, California State President AARP League of Women Voters of California says..."We urge all voters to read the fine print of Prop. 98. Hidden provisions eliminate rent control and renter protections, jeopardize environmental protections and threaten other laws that protect our communities. The League of Women Voters of California carefully examined Prop. 98 and was left with no choice but to oppose this deceptive measure."Janis Hirohama, President League of Women Voters of California California Professional Firefighters say..."Prop. 98 would hurt the supply of affordable housing needed to keep firefighters and paramedics in our communities where they can more easily respond to emergencies. The measure also has provisions that will make it difficult for public safety professionals to protect our communities and the public."Lou Paulson, President California Professional Firefighters Tenants' Rights Groups say..."The landlords are scheming and paying millions to try to wipe out basic protections for renters. They stand to make millions on the backs of seniors, widows, veterans, students, and working families. We're confident voters will see through their Hidden Agendas scheme and soundly reject Prop. 98 in June."Dean Preston, Executive Director Tenants Together National Coalition of Hispanic Organizations says..."Prop. 98 is an appalling measure and should be opposed by anybody who cares about maintaining affordable housing for our working populations, many of whom are minorities, and maintaining nice communities where our children grow up."Mario Obledo, President National Coalition of Hispanic Organizations Sierra Club California says..."Prop. 98 is a disastrous measure for our environment. Every leading environmental group in the state opposes this measure because 98 will gut the laws and regulations that protect our natural resources."Bill Magavern, State Director Sierra Club California California Alliance for Retired Americans says..."Many seniors live on limited incomes and depend on rent control to help survive. The Hidden Agendas Scheme [Prop. 98] would eliminate rent control and hurt seniors, veterans, and working families."Nan Brasmer, President California Alliance for Retired Americans League of California Homeowners say..."Homeowners want true eminent domain protections but will not be duped into enacting harmful and deceptive provisions that have nothing to do with eminent domain. Prop. 98 would actually hurt homeowners by abolishing important protections for our communities and our ability to ensure residents have an adequate supply of clean drinking water."Ken Willis, President League of California Homeowners Association of California Water Agencies says..."Prop. 98 would jeopardize our ability to protect the quality of our drinking water and secure new sources of water to prevent water shortages."Tim Quinn, Executive Director Association of California Water Agencies Western Growers Association says..."This is an unacceptable risk... We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure surface storage and conveyance projects that are the literal lifeline for our industry and we must not see it jeopardized by events within our control. Accordingly, the [Western Growers] Board of Directors voted... to oppose the CPOFPA [Prop. 98]."Thomas A. Nassif, President and CEO Western Growers Association California School Board Association says..."The initiative could restrict the ability of local government to pass land use or zoning ordinances to restrict the kind of businesses-such as bars, liquor stores, or strip clubs-that could be located near a school. It would also make school construction more costly and complicated"Scott P. Plotkin, Executive Director California School Board Association National Wildlife Federation says..."Prop. 98...would undermine important laws that protect our air, land, coasts, wildlife and laws we need to combat global warming."Jim Lyon, Vice President for Conservation National Wildlife Federation Western Center on Law and Poverty says..."Unpublicized provisions of Prop. 98 would undo countless laws dealing with tenants' rights and protections that have evolved over the years in hard fought battles. At its core, Prop. 98 is a measure to benefit wealthy landlords and mobile home park owners at the expense of millions of seniors, disabled, and working families."Christine Minnehan, Director of Legislative Advocacy Western Center on Law and Poverty California League of Conservation Voters says..."[Prop. 98] contains dangerous language that could severely harm our ability to protect the environment including preserving open space, achieving clean air, protecting our climate, and many other environmental laws. Anybody who cares about the environment should oppose this measure."Susan Smartt, Executive Director California League of Conservation Voters Renters and Mobile Home Park Residents say..."I'm a retiree and a veteran and I've lived in my studio apartment for 30 years. Rent control is the only way I can afford a roof over my head. If 98 passes, hundreds of thousands of seniors could face skyrocketing rents."Robert C. Potter (80), U.S. Army Veteran, San Francisco "I am 77 years-old and have to work part time in my golden years just to make ends meet. If it weren't for rent control, I wouldn't be able to afford a place to live. I hope voters reject Prop. 98 to protect people like me." Conny Caruso Hutchinson (77), Los Angeles "I'm a retired widow on a fixed income. Prop. 98 would financially devastate many seniors like me who depend on rent control and other laws that protect us against unfair landlords. Vote NO on Prop. 98." Helen J. Furber (85), Calistoga "My wife and I are concerned about our survival if Prop 98 passes. If seniors and low-income families lose our rent control and other protections that safeguard our homes, we'll be left with nothing." Robert Fleak (68), Veteran, Rohnert Park "With rent control we can budget the yearly increase, but there is no way we could afford to pay rent in the amount these Park Owners demand as their due." John (79) and Elizabeth Cirica (77), Alviso "I have been here ten years and I love this community. I don't want to see anything happen to the people who live here... If Prop. 98 passes it will jeopardize my financial security, my home value and my peace of mind." Juanita Bradbury (66), San Marcos "It's despicable that wealthy landlords are trying to steal hard earned home equity from vulnerable individuals like myself. I'm afraid if Prop. 98 passes, nobody will want to buy our home, and we'll have nowhere to go." Larry Jackson, Riverside "It's shameless that these landlords would try to deceive California voters -- just to put money in their pockets at the expense of renters like me!" Janelle Longwell, Los Angeles
